CLUTE, Texas — A Clute Intermediate School student was killed Thursday morning after being struck by a pickup truck while riding her bicycle near the school.
The student has been identified as Scarlett Patton, 11.
The crash happened around 7:20 a.m. near Clute Intermediate School, located at 421 E. Main Street.
Police said Scarlett was riding her bicycle when she was struck by a GMC Sierra pickup truck that was exiting the school parking lot.
The driver stopped immediately and tried to render aid.
Bystanders also attempted to help before emergency responders arrived. Scarlett died at the scene.
The incident has shaken the Clute Intermediate campus and the surrounding community. Brazosport ISD said counselors and additional staff would be available to support students and staff affected by the loss.
For many families in the area, the crash happened during one of the busiest parts of the school day, when parents are dropping off students and children are arriving on foot or by bicycle.
The death of a child near a school campus is the kind of loss that reaches beyond one family. It affects classmates, teachers, school staff, parents and an entire community that now finds itself grieving together.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Residents are being urged to be cautious around school zones, especially during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup times, when traffic, pedestrians and bicycles are often moving through the same areas.
