BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas — Brazoria County residents have an opportunity to apply for a role that directly affects the local property appraisal protest process.

The Brazoria Central Appraisal District is accepting applications for residents interested in serving as Appraisal Review Board members for the 2026–2027 term, according to an announcement from the district.

The Appraisal Review Board, commonly called the ARB, hears disputes involving property appraisals, exemptions and equity issues that are not resolved informally with the appraisal district.

The board acts as part of the formal protest process. It weighs evidence from property owners, agents and appraisal district representatives before making decisions on appraisal-related disputes.

BCAD describes the ARB as a group of impartial citizens that serves as the “judicial” part of the protest system. The board is separate and independent from the appraisal district and does not handle day-to-day appraisal operations.

Applicants must have lived in Brazoria County for at least two years and must be current on property tax payments, according to the district.

Members are required to complete one full day of training.

The position is not a full-time job, and ARB members do not work for the appraisal district. Members are paid a per diem of $88 to $175 per day when conducting hearings, according to BCAD.

Meeting frequency varies depending on the time of year, but applicants must be available Monday through Thursday from May 1 through July 31, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

ARB hearings and meetings are also listed through the appraisal district’s website. The district notes that property owners appearing by Zoom or phone must submit a notarized affidavit before their hearing.

Applications are available online through the Brazoria Central Appraisal District or at the district office. Completed applications can be submitted to the district’s Board of Directors at 500 North Chenango, Angleton, TX 77515, or by email at help@brazoriacad.org.

The district’s main office is located at 500 N. Chenango St. in Angleton. Its main phone number is 979-849-7792, and office hours are listed as 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays.

Residents can also search appraisal records through the BCAD property search portal, which allows searches by owner, address, property ID and other fields.

The ARB application process comes as appraisal districts continue to draw public attention across Texas. The Texas Secretary of State notes that state law changed the makeup of appraisal district boards in counties with populations of 75,000 or more, adding elected directors alongside appointed members.

The ARB role is separate from those elected appraisal district board seats, but both relate to how property appraisal systems operate in Texas.

For Brazoria County property owners, the ARB can play an important role when appraisal disputes move beyond the informal review stage. The board’s decisions can affect how protests over value, exemptions and equity issues are resolved.

Residents interested in applying can contact the Brazoria Central Appraisal District or visit the district’s website for application information.
