BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas — For some Brazosport ISD students, heading back to school Wednesday won't necessarily mean walking into a traditional classroom.
Brazosport ISD is launching its new Virtual High School program for students in grades 9 through 12 as the district begins the 2026-27 school year on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
The program gives students the option to complete their coursework fully online — or combine virtual classes with some of the traditional high school experience.
Students Can Go Fully Virtual — Or Mix Both
BISD is offering two main options.
Students can choose a fully virtual schedule, completing their academic coursework online, or select a hybrid schedule that combines online classes with certain face-to-face programs.
Those in-person opportunities can include Career and Technical Education courses, fine arts and athletics.
That means a student could potentially complete much of the school day remotely while still coming to campus for programs that require or benefit from in-person participation.
It's Flexible — But It Isn't School Without Deadlines
Virtual students won't simply be handed assignments and left to complete them whenever they want.
According to BISD, courses will follow a structured pacing schedule with weekly expectations and due dates.
Students will receive standards-based instruction aligned with the district's curriculum and taught by Brazosport ISD teachers. Students enrolled in the program also remain official BISD students.
The district says the program is best suited for students who can work independently, manage their time and take initiative with their education.
Not Every Student Is Automatically Accepted
Enrollment requires an application.
BISD reviews a student's previous academic performance as part of the process to determine whether virtual learning appears to be a good fit.
Applications opened June 15, and the district says enrollment will remain available as long as capacity allows.
Students who live outside Brazosport ISD's attendance boundaries are also eligible to apply.
Virtual Learning Could Expand Beyond High School
This year's launch focuses on students entering grades 9 through 12, but BISD has already indicated the program could become larger.
The district says it plans to expand virtual and blended learning options to additional grade levels after the 2026-27 school year.
Brazosport ISD previously operated a Virtual Learning Academy for younger students during the COVID-19 era, but the new high school program represents a dedicated virtual option for the district's high-school population.
With students returning Wednesday, the launch gives Brazosport-area families another choice in what high school can look like — whether that's entirely from home or a mix of online learning and traditional campus activities.
