CLUTE, Texas — Brazosport ISD families will get some relief from rising back-to-school costs this year as every student in the district becomes eligible for free breakfast and lunch.
The district announced that all enrolled students will receive standard school meals at no cost during the 2026–27 school year, regardless of household income or which campus they attend.
Families will not be required to complete a free or reduced-price meal application before their children can participate.
The free meals will begin when students return to class Wednesday, August 12.
Free meals available at every BISD campus
The districtwide program covers both regular breakfast and lunch at every Brazosport ISD campus.
All enrolled students will qualify automatically, including students attending schools in Freeport, Clute, Lake Jackson, Richwood and surrounding communities.
Students will not be charged for the standard meal served through the cafeteria line.
The program does not mean everything sold in the cafeteria will be free. Families may still be charged for optional purchases such as extra portions, snacks, specialty drinks and other à la carte items.
Parents can continue managing money for those optional purchases through SchoolCafé.
No household application required
The district is offering the free meals through the federal Community Eligibility Provision, commonly called CEP.
The program allows qualifying school districts to serve breakfast and lunch to all students without requiring individual families to prove income eligibility.
That means parents will not have to fill out a traditional meal-benefit application or wait for approval before their children can receive free meals.
The change also removes the visible difference between students receiving free, reduced-price or paid meals while they are in the cafeteria line.
Program expands beyond select campuses
In previous years, free meals through CEP were available only at certain qualifying Brazosport ISD campuses.
Students at other schools either paid regular meal prices or had to qualify through a household application.
The districtwide approval expands free breakfast and lunch to every campus for the upcoming school year.
That gives thousands of local students access to the same meal benefits regardless of where they attend school.
Families could see meaningful savings
Brazosport ISD did not include a specific annual savings estimate in its announcement.
However, families whose children regularly purchase both breakfast and lunch will no longer see those standard meal charges deducted from student accounts.
The savings could be especially noticeable for households with multiple children as parents also pay for school supplies, clothing, shoes, technology and activity fees.
The program may also help students who previously skipped meals because they did not have enough money in their accounts or because their families had not completed the required paperwork.
District says portions and menus will remain the same
Brazosport ISD said the move to districtwide free meals will not reduce serving sizes or change the regular menus offered to students.
The district publishes separate breakfast and lunch menus for elementary, intermediate, middle and high school campuses.
Parents should continue checking campus menus if their children have food allergies, medical dietary needs or other restrictions.
Optional food and beverages beyond the standard meal may still carry a charge.
School starts August 12
The first day of classes for Brazosport ISD students is Wednesday, August 12.
Families preparing for the new year should also review district information covering registration, school supplies, immunizations, Chromebook requirements, bus transportation and campus orientation events.
