WEST COLUMBIA, Texas - West Columbia Civic Center Hosting Summer Library Programs for Children.
The West Columbia Library is hosting exciting summer programs for kids to enjoy before the upcoming school year. From preschoolers to school age children, all are welcome to attend free events and activities put together at various locations.
As the summer comes to an end, activities for children become harder to find, but their energy stays prevalent. The west Columbia library provides a great source for parents to get their kids out of house, while also getting them prepared for school.
July and August's Events
Every Monday at 10:30 a.m. the library puts together a themed Storytime and craft for ages 3-5. Attending these events will not only get them out of the house, but it also promotes school readiness by letting them be around children their age and introduces them to a wide vocabulary. Even if your child is not going to school the upcoming year, a regular schedule of Storytimes will drastically help them when it is time to do so.
Whether your child is excited to go back to school or not, the rush of getting school supplies can overwhelm anyone. The second annual field day on August 1st at 2:00 p.m. is perfect for competitive children to compete in games like sack races, tug of war, sponge races, and more. This event is for all ages.
If your child leans more towards inside events during the hot summer, the big blue block event may be a great activity for them. Located in the West Columbia meeting room on August 29th, the gathering will start off with a fun story then allow ages 6-11 to build whatever their hearts desire. The library meeting room can hold up to 38 guests, set by the fire department.
While all events are free of charge, it is advised that parents show up 15 minutes early so there is enough supplies for everyone. Children under the age of 12 have to be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at these events. For more info on events, you can visit the West Columbia library calendar:
Why It Matters and A Exciting New Possibility
These events hosted by the library are encouraging children to read more with a brilliant system. Every time a program is attended or they read 5 hours, they earn a ticket that gives them a chance to win a prize. This encourages them to continue reading so they can earn more tickets.
When asked what families should know, the library's regional manager stated that "our library system is working toward an exciting community goal this summer: reaching 10 million minutes read!" If the community reaches this goal, the system will earn Dash Robots for the library. She states that Dash Robots will "enhance future programming and learning opportunities." The library is just over 8 million minutes, and the deadline is July 31st. They encourage families to keep reading so this exciting new technology can come to our libraries.
