ANGLETON, Texas — Live music is returning to the heart of downtown Angleton as the city pushes to bring more residents, visitors and families into the area while supporting local businesses.

The City of Angleton announced a free community concert for Friday, June 5, as part of the launch of its Eat Local, Shop Local campaign in downtown Angleton. The event is scheduled near the Heart at the county parking lot located at 329 N. Velasco, according to the city.

The concert lineup includes Southern County Line and Derrick Spence, a George Strait tribute performer, with music beginning at 7 p.m. The city said the event is free and family-friendly, with food trucks expected on site.

City officials are also encouraging people to visit nearby restaurants and businesses while downtown for the event.

The city said the night is about more than music. It is also meant to celebrate the local businesses that help fuel the community and encourage residents to spend money close to home.

The June 5 event comes as Angleton continues building on its identity as a music-friendly community.

Angleton was previously designated a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Music Office after completing the state certification process. The city’s Music Friendly page says the program is meant to support music-related economic development and job creation in Texas communities.

City Manager Chris Whittaker said in the city’s Music Friendly announcement that Angleton’s arts and music scene has become an important part of what makes the city a place to visit or call home, pointing to Concerts in the Park and downtown businesses that offer food and live performances.

The downtown concert push also follows the city’s broader effort to promote attractions, markets and tourism activity in Angleton. The city lists Angleton Market Days, the Brazoria County Fair & Rodeo, the Brazoria County Historical Museum, Crocodile Encounter, MSR Houston, Peach Street Farmer’s Market and other attractions as part of its tourism draw.

For downtown businesses, free concerts can bring more than entertainment.

They can mean more foot traffic, more dinner stops, more dessert runs, more shopping and more visibility for small businesses that rely on community support. The city’s event announcement specifically encourages residents to eat local, shop local and support Angleton businesses.

The event also gives families another low-cost option during the summer season. Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and coolers for a relaxed evening downtown.

Parking for the June 5 event is expected to include the West Annex, overflow parking at the courthouse and county lot parking on Chenango, according to the city’s announcement.

The return of downtown live music gives Angleton another chance to show whether community events can help turn the city center into more than a place people drive through.

For residents, the message is simple: bring a chair, bring the family and bring support for local businesses.

This story may be updated if the city releases additional concert dates or lineup details.
